QbCheck included in every assessment — most private clinics don't offer this

QbCheck is a UKCA-marked, NICE-recommended objective test measuring attention, activity and impulsivity. It provides clinical evidence that strengthens your diagnosis. At NeuroAxis it's included as standard — not an optional extra.

NHS vs private assessment

Both pathways follow the same NICE guidelines. The difference is time — and the level of support you receive along the way.

After your diagnosis

Shared care & medication pathway

Understanding what happens after your assessment — and what to expect from your GP.

What is a shared care agreement?

A shared care agreement (SCA) is a formal arrangement where your GP agrees to take over prescribing your ADHD medication — following an initial recommendation from a specialist. Under a shared care agreement, your GP writes the prescription and monitors your medication on an ongoing basis, typically at NHS cost.

NeuroAxis shared care agreements are widely accepted by GPs across the UK. We produce a comprehensive clinical report that includes clear prescribing guidance to support your GP in taking on your care.

Important: While many GPs do accept shared care, it is not guaranteed. GP practices are not legally obligated to accept shared care arrangements from private providers. This is an NHS policy position reflected in guidance from NHS England and acknowledged by ADHD UK. We are transparent about this so you can make a fully informed decision.
🛡️

Our commitment — now and after CQC registration

While we complete our CQC registration, you can be assured of the same gold standard of care that defines everything we do. NeuroAxis is fully insured, all clinicians are NMC-registered specialists, and every assessment follows NICE guidelines NG87 — the same standards a CQC-registered provider is held to.

Once CQC registration is confirmed, NeuroAxis will take on full prescribing responsibilities directly — removing the reliance on GP shared care for patients who prefer it. This means a cleaner, more straightforward medication pathway managed entirely within NeuroAxis.

Regardless of whether you access medication through shared care or our own prescribing pathway, our relationship with you does not end at diagnosis. We are here throughout your journey — from your first call to ongoing clinical support.

Right to Choose (RTC)

The NHS Right to Choose pathway allows eligible patients in England to request an ADHD assessment with an approved independent provider, funded by the NHS. If your GP refers you via Right to Choose to an NHS-commissioned provider, the assessment is free and the prescribing pathway is clearer — as the provider works within NHS commissioning arrangements.

Please note: Right to Choose does not guarantee shared care either. Even following an NHS-commissioned assessment, some GP practices may decline to prescribe ADHD medication. According to ADHD UK, shared care refusal remains one of the most common issues faced by people newly diagnosed with ADHD, regardless of whether their diagnosis came from an NHS or private provider.

Medication costs — what to expect

We believe in full transparency

With shared care (GP prescribes)

~£9.90

per NHS prescription (2024 charge). Free if you hold a prepayment certificate or qualify for free prescriptions.

Without shared care (private prescription)

£30–£80+

per month, depending on medication type and dose. Costs vary by pharmacy and medication brand.

If your GP declines shared care, you still have options. Our clinical partner network can provide private prescriptions, and we will always support you in making the case to your GP with a comprehensive clinical report. Many GP practices that initially decline do reconsider when provided with thorough clinical documentation.

For further guidance on navigating shared care, ADHD UK provides excellent resources and template letters to support patients in requesting shared care from their GP.

Our SCAs are widely accepted

We produce comprehensive prescribing guidance that supports GP acceptance.

⚠️

Acceptance is not guaranteed

No private provider can guarantee GP shared care — we will always be upfront about this.

💊

Private prescribing available

If your GP declines, our partner network can prescribe privately while you continue to pursue shared care.

📋

We will support you throughout

We provide the documentation, guidance and clinical letters needed to give you the best chance of shared care acceptance.
