Understanding ADHD

What is ADHD?

ADHD is a neurodevelopmental condition

— not a lifestyle choice, lack of discipline, or bad parenting. It is caused by differences in brain development and brain activity that affect attention, impulse control and activity levels. It is recognised and diagnosed by the NHS and private clinicians across the UK using NICE guidelines.

A neurodevelopmental condition

ADHD affects how the brain develops and functions, involving differences in the prefrontal cortex — the area responsible for attention, planning and impulse control.

More common than you think

ADHD affects approximately 5% of children and 3–4% of adults in the UK. Many adults were never diagnosed as children and only seek answers later in life.

A lifelong condition

ADHD doesn't simply disappear in adulthood. While symptoms can change over time, many people continue to experience ADHD throughout their lives.

Highly treatable

With the right diagnosis and support, people with ADHD can thrive. Treatment options include medication, coaching, behavioural strategies and workplace or educational adjustments.

Strongly genetic

ADHD runs in families. If a parent has ADHD, their child has approximately a 50% chance of also having it — which means one family member's diagnosis often leads to others.

Three presentations

ADHD presents as Predominantly Inattentive, Predominantly Hyperactive-Impulsive, or Combined. Each person's experience is unique.
